Child taken to hospital after being struck by vehicle in west Medford

An 8-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle and dragged several feet in west Medford Friday morning.

The incident happened at 7:40 a.m. in the 500 block of Hamilton Avenue, near the road's intersections with a walking path from Union Park and West 13th Street, according to 911 dispatch logs.

Lt. Curtis Whipple of Medford police said a preliminary investigation shows the boy had been crossing the street from the walking path when he was struck. He was reportedly on his way to school.

"It looks like he just darted out in front of the vehicle. At that point and time, the driver tried to react and didn't have enough time to react," Whipple said, adding there was no designated crosswalk where the boy was hit.

Medford police and fire agencies responded to the scene. The boy was treated and transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.

"At the scene he was conscious, he was breathing. He was doing OK," Whipple said. "It looked like he had some pretty good injuries, though."

Sgt. Don Lane said the boy suffered "road-rash"-type abrasions and trauma to the head that's still being examined. "But he's stable and it doesn't seem to be life-threatening," Lane said.

Whipple said police are looking into varying statements taken by officers regarding the circumstances of the accident.
