Rogue River man dies in Grants Pass-area crash

GRANTS PASS — A Rogue River man died in a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on Highway 99 near Fruitdale Drive.

Robert W. Smith, 67, was driving a 1988 Chevrolet S-10 pickup  southbound on Highway 99 when he attempted to make a U-turn in an area where residences are near the road. Oregon State Police Sgt.

Jeff Allison reported Smith's pickup turned, he collided with a another southbound vehicle, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado.

The impact caused both pickups to slide across the road and into the driveway of a private residence where it struck two parked vehicles and a boat. Police said Smith died at the scene, while the the driver of the Silverado, Michael E. Clark, 62 of Rogue River was transported to Three Rivers Medical Center for serious injuries.

 Highway 99 was closed for more than four hours  as the OSP removed vehicles and investigated the crash. Grants Pass Fire and Rescue, Josephine County Sheriff's Office, Josephine County District Attorney's Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation, assisted the OSP.
