Semi and pickup destroyed in early-morning fire

A parked semi-truck and a pickup were destroyed early Wednesday in a south Medford fire.

Medford Fire-Rescue responded to reports of the fire just after 3 a.m., with emergency calls reporting flames in the 500 block of Charlotte Ann Road, off Highway 99 near the Bear Creek Golf Course. Fire inspector Chase Browning said the fire started in the semi, a 2015 Freightliner Cascadia with a sleeper cab, and spread to the pickup, a 1990 Ford.

"It was far enough away from (structures) where it didn't threaten any homes," Browning said.

A neighbor awoke to popping noises and spotted the flames. Two fire engines responded to the scene, located at the end of the road, to find both vehicles engulfed by fire.

Firefighters spent about 12 minutes putting the fire out, but both vehicles were total losses, fire officials said. An overhead power line also was scorched by the flames. Officials estimate about $125,000 worth of damage to both vehicles.

Investigators said the fire was not considered suspicious, but an investigation of the cause was under way.

"There's still a lot we need to look at," Browning said. "So far nothing is out of the ordinary."

Anyone with pictures or additional information about the fire was asked to call Browning at 541-774-2300.
