Police look for man who allegedly stole security guard's gun
Police are looking for 37-year-old Steven Valencia, Jr., who allegedly stole a security guard's gun during a scuffle in downtown Medford early today.
At 12:41 a.m., a security guard working at Inn at the Commons walked into one of the hotel's lower-level bathrooms and saw Valencia, described by police as a transient, loitering there, police said.
Sgt. Steve Furst of Medford police said Valencia tried to leave, and the security guard tried to keep him there until officers arrived.
"(He) did not want to stick around," Furst said.
The guard told police a scuffle ensued and his holster and gun slipped off his belt during the fight. Valencia allegedly scooped them up and took off, leaving a backpack at the scene with some personal property inside that helped officers identify him, Furst said.
The security guard suffered minor injuries in the altercation, Furst said.
Valencia is described as white, 5-feet-11 and about 180 pounds, with light brown hair cut very short and a goatee, police said. He was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt and jeans.
Anyone with information about the case or Valencia's whereabouts is asked to contact Medford police at 541-770-4784.
