Motorcyclist who rear-ended semi in critical condition
A man who drove his motorcycle into the back of a commercial truck on Interstate 5 just outside Ashland Tuesday morning is fighting for his life at a Medford hospital.
Eduardo Cortes Magana, 44, of Mexico, is in critical condition at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, a hospital official said. There is a chance he will be transferred to Oregon Health & Science University, the official said.
Oregon State Police said Cortes was driving southbound on I-5 between mileposts 10 and 11 at about 70 mph when he slammed his 2015 BMW motorcycle into the back of a semi driven by 31-year-old Parajmot Singh Sangha of British Columbia, who was traveling at about 35 mph in the slow lane.
"(Magana) rode directly into the center of the trailer ... and sustained life-threatening injuries," an OSP report said.
Sangha was not injured in the 11 a.m. crash.
OSP, Ashland Fire & Rescue and Oregon Department of Transportation responded to the scene. Responders closed the slow lane for about 45 minutes, causing traffic to back up past exit 11 to the north.
