Two Cave Junction residents arrested in murder of Illinois Valley resident

CAVE JUNCTION — Two Cave Junction residents have been arrested in connection with the July 27 shooting death of William A. Roberts.

Oregon State Police detectives and SWAT team apprehended Renee Lee Edrington, 39, and Kyle James Forester,  29, at their 22503 Redwood Highway residence in Cave Junction.

The lawmen serving a search warrant arrived at the couple's residence at 4:45 Saturday morning. Edrington was outside the residence and armed with a handgun. She failed to comply with trooper commands to drop her handgun and advanced on the police. Troopers deployed less-than-lethal-impact rounds which subsequently subdued Edrington. Forester, meanwhile, exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

OSP investigators believe Forester and Edrington were in some sort of confrontation with Roberts early July 27. Police surmise Forester and Edrington were in a separate vehicle, pursuing Roberts when they shot at him, fatally striking him in the back of the head leading to the vehicle crash. Investigators believe the pair returned to the crash scene and removed Roberts' wallet, cellphone and handgun from his 2000 Ford Ranger.

Forester and Edrington were lodged in Josephine County Jail for murder, robbery and theft.

Last Wednesday, OSP Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 199 near milepost 30 on the outskirts of Cave Junction. A nearby resident told trooper he had heard what he thought was a vehicle crash around 1:45 a.m.

Police initially believe Roberts, 39, of Cave Junction, had drifted off the roadway and struck a tree. Later, they later discovered Roberts suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
