Heroin addict gets 10 years for sexually abusing girl

A heroin addict who sexually abused a little girl has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Patrick O'Ryan McShan, 28, of Phoenix pleaded no contest to two counts of first-degree sexual abuse Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court. With the no contest plea, he did not admit guilt, but conceded prosecutors would likely prove their case at trial.

Family members of the girl berated McShan for smirking during his court appearance, saying he is a liar who has never shown remorse for the crimes.

"Living with this man was like living with the devil," the victim's mother said. "He hurt this family in more ways than one. He came to her room night after night, hurting her. I really hope at some point he feels remorse."

McShan was accused of sexually abusing the girl, who is now 10, on or between March 2014 and March 2016, according to an indictment.

The victim's grandmother said McShan came into the house, stole from the mother, who is disabled, and abused the girl.

"He is a predator and a monster and should never be let out of prison," the grandmother said.

According to court testimony, there was drug use by adults in the home where the victim lived.

Defense attorney Alyssa Bartholomew said McShan entered the no contest plea because of his heroin addiction. She said McShan does feel remorse, and his actions have hurt both his own and the victim's family.

"It breaks my heart," she said. "It breaks everyone's heart."

Judge Patricia Crain said McShan's drug addiction is not an excuse for his behavior.

"Victimizing a child is unforgivable," Crain said. "You can use the excuse, 'I was high.' So what? You chose to get high."

Crain urged McShan to stay away from drugs when he's released from prison and to consider the impacts of his drug use on himself and others.

"Look where it's led you. Look where it's led the victim," she said.
