Eagle Point fire damages two-story home

Local report

A fire damaged the second story of a home in Eagle Point and closed a nearby street Friday.

The fire was reported just before noon in the 100 block of Ponderosa Way, which is off Alta Vista Road. Jackson County Fire District 3 responded with four engines, and Medford Fire-Rescue provided another engine for support.

The home's residents — two adults and five children — were home at the time but evacuated quickly with several pets after seeing smoke.

Fire District 3 spokeswoman Ashley Lara said crews saw thick smoke pouring from the second story when they arrived. Firefighters focused on the second floor and pulled down the ceiling to keep flames from spreading in the attic.

"From what we've heard so far, it started on the second floor, not in the attic," Lara said, adding that the cause and starting point were still under investigation.

Alta Vista Road was shut down for about an hour.
