South Grants Pass exit closed following tanker crash
A South Grants Pass freeway entrance is closed after a tanker containing liquid oxygen rolled over Tuesday afternoon.
The Interstate 5 exit 55 on-ramp is closed after the tanker truck rolled over near the Applebee's parking lot on Agness Avenue near the Parkway, according to Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Gary Leaming.
Grants Pass fire and police are on scene, and police have evacuated businesses near the lot including the Shari's, Subway and Applebee's restaurants since the rollover crash, which occurred about 3:45 p.m.
The vehicle involved in the crash was initially described as a propane tanker, but the Jackson County Hazmat team identified the leaking substance as oxygen.
In town, the Parkway has been closed at Terry Lane near the Fred Meyer store. A detour route is directing southbound traffic to Rogue River Highway, according to Leaming. Crews were expected to work into the night either righting the tanker or offloading its cargo, Leaming said.
