Wheelchair-bound man hit with a rock
A Medford man was arrested Monday for hitting a man in a wheelchair in the head with a rock and stealing his prescription glasses.
Medford police allege Howard Victor Gonzales, 50, attacked the 49-year-old victim just before 7:30 a.m. Monday in the 2300 block of North Pacific Highway, near Jack in the Box. Prior to the attack, police said, Gonzales accused the victim of stealing the wheelchair, which he claimed belonged to him.
Police said Gonzales threatened to assault the man, who responded by pulling out a knife to defend himself. That's when Gonzales picked up a rock, struck the man and fled on foot with the victim's prescription glasses, police said.
The victim was treated for a laceration to his head at a local hospital. Police arrested Gonzales about 10 hours later, at 5:21 p.m., at his home, in the 2200 block of North Pacific Highway. He remained in the Jackson County Jail Tuesday on charges of second-degree robbery, second-degree assault and harassment.
