Rescue crews help man stranded in Bear Creek

A man stranded on a rock in Bear Creek drew firefighter crews from Medford and a water rescue team from Jackson County Fire District 3 to the Greenway this evening.

The man was standing on a partially submerged rock in Bear Creek behind Crater Lake Ford at about 6 p.m., unable to make his way to the other side. It is not immediately known why the man was in Bear Creek.

Medford firefighters responded, wading in about 2-1/2 feet of water to bring the man a lifejacket and await water rescue crews.

District 3's swift water rescue team secured a rope to the bank, waded out to the man and were able to help him to safety. He was escorted to an awaiting ambulance.

Bear Creek was running about 346 cubic feet per second, about 30 percent higher than normal for this time of year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
