Woman faces charges for alleged hit-and-run

A Medford woman with a past DUII conviction is facing a slew of charges after allegedly crashing in front of the Holly Theatre, injuring a couple and fleeing the scene in an SUV.

Christa Kay Kreinbrink, 32, of the first block of North Oakdale Avenue, entered not guilty pleas Monday to charges of third-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured people, reckless driving, second-degree criminal mischief and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.

She has a pre-trial conference scheduled on Oct. 30 in Jackson County Circuit Court.

Cael and Marcella Weston of Ashland were taking a walk near the theater when an SUV bore down on them on Aug. 27. Marcella Weston pulled her husband into the theater's alcove.

The vehicle, a photo of which was snapped by a passerby around 4 p.m., was traveling west on Sixth Street when it veered into the sidewalk, knocking over trash cans, a street sign and three cast iron bollards. Based on the vehicle tracks on the sidewalk, the vehicle continued on the sidewalk and knocked over a bollard as the driver steered back onto the street.

While the Westons avoided serious injuries, she was injured on her leg and back and his arm was slightly injured.

As the couple were being interviewed by police, Kreinbrink walked to the theater and told officers it was her vehicle that had crashed into the building, but said she wasn’t the driver.

Later, turning to the Westons, she said tearfully, “I’m so sorry.”

Police questioned Kreinbrink extensively before arresting her.

The bollards likely saved the couple from more serious injury and prevented damage to the historic Holly Theatre, which is in the midst of a restoration.

In 2015, Kreinbrink was convicted of driving under the influence of intoxicants. She later completed a diversion program and had the charge dismissed.

In addition to facing charges for the alleged hit-and-run at the Holly, Kreinbrink was ticketed for operating a vehicle without driving privileges and failing to carry proof of insurance.
