Medford daycare owner faces abuse charges

A man who operated an east Medford daycare center with his wife is behind bars on accusations he sexually abused two girls under the age of 6 in his care.

Andrew Joseph Conaway, 32, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and faces charges of three counts of first-degree sexual abuse, three counts of first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, two counts of first-degree sodomy and one felony count of private indecency.

Police allege he abused the girls while operating Family Friendly Daycare at 3087 Tahitian Ave., according to court documents and a release issued Wednesday by Medford police.

A call to Medford police for more information was not immediately returned.

Conaway was arraigned Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court on first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree unlawful sexual penetration. Court records allege he abused one victim between August 2016 and Feb. 14, 2018.

New felony charges of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, two counts of first-degree sodomy and a misdemeanor count of private indecency were added Wednesday, according to Medford police and Jackson County Jail records. Conaway has not yet been arraigned on the new charges.

Searches for "Family Friendly Daycare" yielded no web results, nor did searches for the business and Conaway's name in the Oregon Secretary of State's business registry.

Anyone with information about Conaway or the day care center are asked to contact Medford police investigators at 541-774-2250.

Jackson County court records show that Conaway's only prior criminal history was a misdemeanor assault arrest on Feb. 11, 2017. Charges of assault, harassment and strangulation were dropped as part of an October agreement in which he pleaded guilty to a charge of interfering with a police officer, court documents show. He was sentenced to 11 months' bench probation and 40 hours' community service.
