Mom allegedly gave pot to kids, then assaulted son
A Talent mother is facing charges after allegedly giving marijuana to her 12-year-old son and his friend, then assaulting her son.
Melinda Ann Cypert, 42, of the 600 block of Talent Avenue has been charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with harassment, two counts of fourth-degree assault, two counts of strangulation and two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.
She was scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Friday.
On Dec. 31, 2017, Talent police responded to a report of a domestic incident, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Police found the boys locked in an upstairs bedroom with Cypert banging on the door, trying to get in, the affidavit said.
Her son told police his mother had provided marijuana to him and his 13-year-old friend earlier in the night and they ingested the marijuana, the affidavit said. The friend has since turned 14, according to his date of birth recorded on the affidavit.
Cypert’s son said she had entered his room and grabbed him around the neck, obstructing his breathing. He said she also struck him in the face, causing a cut to his lower lip and bleeding, the affidavit said.
Cypert also grabbed the friend’s shirt and bumped him, but didn’t injure him, the affidavit said.
Cypert invoked her right to remain silent and did not provide a statement to police, the affidavit said.
