Surveillance video released in fatal JoCo arson

Oregon State Police is hoping that video of an unknown arson suspect throwing a flare will yield new tips in the Cave Junction arson fire in which a man died earlier this year.

The video released Wednesday purportedly shows unknown suspect or suspects driving a hatchback pulling into a Cave Junction parking lot and throwing a lit flare from the car's passenger-side window late the night of Jan. 14, as part of newly released information about the fire reported just after midnight the following morning in which65-year-old Donald Thomas died.

Witnesses told arson detectives that an unknown male suspect was spotted throwing a flare at Thomas' home, according to previous news reports.

Police now say there were "several other incidents" involving lit flares in the Cave Junction area around the same time as the fatal fire, including the referenced video.

Anyone with information is asked to call Oregon State Police dispatchers at 1-800-442-2068 and reference case No. SP19-017772.
