Hiker killed after 100-foot fall near Ashland

A Medford man died after falling off a cliff in the wilderness near Ashland.

Michael Kent Brewster, 63, reportedly fell to his death Wednesday evening while hiking Lost Falls trail northeast of Ashland, according to a release issued Thursday by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

A woman called 911 at 8:08 p.m. to report the fall, but she had to hike to another location in order to get within cell range.

The sheriff’s office’s search and rescue tactical rope rescue team found the man’s body Thursday morning in the water at the base of a 100-foot cliff, according to police. The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office is still investigating the cause and manner of Brewster’s death.
