Washington man arrested in Grants Pass homicide

A Washington man is dead and another Washington man has been arrested on murder charges following a midday homicide outside a Grants Pass Fred Meyer store.

Rolando Rivas Jr., 22, was arrested Thursday on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of an unnamed man shortly after noon outside the store, according to a news release issued by the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.

Police found a man dead in the store parking lot in the 1100 block of Grants Pass Parkway following 911 reports of an assault at 12:18 p.m. The release described the victim as a 26-year-old man from the state of Washington, but the victim’s name won’t be released until next of kin is notified.

Police said they found Rivas, named in Josephine County Jail records as Rolando Miguel Rivas, “a short distance away,” according to the release. He was arrested without incident at 12:30 p.m.

Police did not release details of what led up to the killing, the cities of residence for Rivas or the victim. He will be held in the Josephine County Jail, according to police.

Police told KTVL that the victim had been stabbed.
