Man killed near Central Point identified

Police have identified a man killed Thursday near Central Point as 38-year-old Nicholas Patrick Kubasiak.

Kubasiak was found dead outside his residence in the 6600 block of Ponderosa Street, according to a news release issued Friday by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

A day after the killing, sheriff's office Public Information Officer Mike Moran described the death investigation as still "very active."

No arrests have been made in Kubasiak's death, according to Moran, but investigators with the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit were still gathering facts surrounding the reported shooting in order to piece together the circumstances.

"These things require being very thorough," Moran said.

An autopsy was conducted Friday, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, but police have not yet released its findings in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation. More information could be available next week, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

What’s known thus far is that a neighbor called 911 at 3:38 p.m. Thursday after hearing a gunshot, and that police found Kubasiak outside his home, according to the release and earlier news reports.

In the hours after the shooting, sheriff’s deputies said that “all parties were accounted for” in the shooting, and that they were cooperating with investigators.
