Suspect charged in 'unprovoked' Medford knife attack

A 57-year-old man was hospitalized with stab wounds to the torso Tuesday night following a knife attack in Medford that police say was unprovoked.

The suspect, Eli Michael Keylor, 20, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault in the attack, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records. He is being held in Jackson County Jail on $500,000 bail.

Medford police responded to a reported stabbing at the Minute Market, 2521 Table Rock Road, at 9:12 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release. The 57-year-old man was taking a smoke break behind the business when Keylor allegedly walked up and began stabbing the man for no reason.

“There was nothing verbal. Just began stabbing him,”said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau.

Keylor allegedly fled the scene when the man fought back, Budreau said.

Officers from Medford, Central Point and Jackson County established a perimeter and searched the area, aided by a police dog.

“When you have a serious assault like this with no connection between the victim and the suspect, if we don’t catch him fleeing the scene, there’s a good chance we won’t identify him, because there’s no known motive,” Budreau said.

The victim was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center. His condition was not available Wednesday, but police said his injuries were believed to be “non-life threatening.”

About 44 minutes after the alleged attack, a Medford police officer spotted Keylor in a field behind Howard Elementary School, about a half mile from the Minute Market. Keylor allegedly fled, but the officer was able to catch him.

Police said they have found no connection between the victim and Keylor.

Keylor has no criminal history in Oregon, court records show, but Budreau says police have arrested him numerous times, which included restraining order violations and a separate warrant arrest. The charges that led to the warrant were not immediately available.
