Man presumed drowned in Agate Lake

A missing man is believed to have drowned after he went under while swimming at Agate Lake and never resurfaced.

At 5:07 p.m. Monday, a family reported that a man in their party called for help about 40 yards from the western shore of the lake, and went under before others could reach him, according to Jackson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mike Moran.

Marine patrol deputies and search-and-rescue personnel looked for the man, who has not yet been identified, until sundown Monday and until 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to Moran. The sheriff’s office was back on the water again at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Moran said low visibility is hampering the search.

“The problem with Agate Lake is visibility has never been good, and it’s still that way,” Moran said.

He called the incident an especially “tragic circumstance” because there were no “obvious signs of danger.” Moran said the weather was clear, but “bodies of water are difficult to understand sometimes.”

“We don’t know what occurred to create the emergency,” Moran said.
