Grass fire near Medford prompts I-5 detour

A grass fire prompted a roughly hourlong detour on Interstate 5 near South Medford.

Southbound freeway traffic is back open on the left lane south of Exit 27 following a Thursday evening reported along the freeway, according to a release Oregon Department of Transportation shortly after 8:15 p.m. Motorists should use caution in the area, and watch for fire crews and equipment in the slow lane and shoulder.

Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon records show two grass fires were reported along I-5 reported between Medford and Talent. The first call came in at 7:14 p.m. on southbound I-5 near mile marker 26, and a second call was reported at 7:28 p.m. near Talent between mile markers 21 and 22 on southbound I-5.

The fire south of Medford at Milepost 26 initially attacked the west side of the freeway and the median, according to an earlier ODOT release. The detour had motorists to take Exit 27 to Garfield Street to Oregon Hwy 99, then back on the freeway at Phoenix.
