Fatal Grants Pass fire under investigation
Investigators are piecing together an early morning house fire in southwest Grants Pass in which firefighters say they found a body.
Neighbors and witnesses first called 911 about a fire at 50 SW Western Ave. — off Southwest G Street — at 4:18 a.m. Saturday, according to a release issued by the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.
By the time crews from Grants Pass Fire/Rescue and Rural Metro Fire arrived on scene, the fire at the home was fully involved. And it took an hour of “aggressive firefighting” to knock down the fire.
Pacific Power crews also assisted firefighters after live power lines detached from the home and fell on the ground.
The fire didn’t spread to neighboring homes, but firefighters had several residents evacuate as a precaution.
Inside the home, crews found human remains, and Grants Pass police detectives are working with firefighters and fire investigators to identify the body and to notify the person’s next of kin.
