Man killed in early morning Ashland shooting
A Talent man is in the Jackson County Jail on murder and manslaughter charges after police say he shot and killed a man Monday morning in Ashland.
Robert Paul Keegan, 47, is being held on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, unlawful possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, according to a news release. Keegan had remained on scene and was arrested when police arrived. Information about his bail amount was not immediately available. The name of the victim has not been released by police.
The shooting occurred at about 4:20 a.m. in the parking lot of Stratford Inn, 555 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland police Chief Tighe O’Meara said.
Ashland and Phoenix police responded to a report of a shooting and found the victim dead from a single gunshot wound to the chest, the release said. Ashland Fire & Rescue personnel attempted to render aid but were unsuccessful.
Both Keegan and the victim were guests at Stratford Inn but did not know each other, police said. Police said Keegan and the man had been arguing when Keegan pulled a gun out of his coat and fired a single shot, which struck the man in the chest. Additional details were not available.
The investigation is ongoing, with Ashland police assisted by the Jackson County Major Assault & Death Investigation Unit, an interdepartmental team composed of personnel from Medford police, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.
Keegan has no additional criminal history in Oregon, court records show.
