Ruch man gets 12 years for child porn, child abuse

Arrest stemmed from child porn exchanged via Facebook

A Ruch man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Tuesday for child pornography he exchanged in 2019, and for his abuse of a child more than a decade earlier.

Joaquin Amadeus Cowart, 42, pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to second-degree sexual abuse, admitting that he abused a juvenile between 2007 and 2009, and he pleaded no-contest to charges of encouraging child sexual abuse stemming from explicit files exchanged on Facebook servers between December 2018 and October 2019.

An uploaded image of child sexual abuse prompted a National Center for Missing and Exploited Children tip to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and search warrants to Facebook and a local internet provider, according to a press release from the Jackson County District Attorney’s office.

On Oct. 24, 2019, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Cowart at his home in the 1800 block of Upper Applegate Road.

Shortly after his arrest, a woman came forward to investigators and disclosed that she had been sexually abused by Cowart a decade prior when she was a juvenile.
