Fire destroys Galice Resort store and restaurant

A two-alarm fire destroyed the Galice Resort store and restaurant Tuesday morning by the time Rural Metro Fire could make it to the scene.

"Unfortunately we are looking at a building on the property that is probably a total loss,“ said Rural Metro Fire spokeswoman Jess Webb.

The owner called 911 from the remote area after smelling smoke in the building. Webb said the resort was open at the time.

The resort is located along a wild and scenic area along the Rogue River and does not have a lot of development nearby. There is no cell service and the fire department is located approximately 25 miles away.

"We are always concerned about this area during wildland fire. It has a significant impact in this area it tends to get socked in with smoke and it damages tourism in a big way," Webb said.

The department deployed five engines and three water tenders.

The Oregon Department of Forestry was dispatched to prevent spot fires from spreading to the nearby wildlands.

Natalie Webber, a spokesperson for the department, said there were approximately five spot fires covering about a tenth of an acre. She said those were quickly mopped up by ODF crews.

The wind was shifting directions so the spot fires spread relatively fast, though Webber said the cooler temperatures played in the crew's favor.

ODF sent a helicopter and an air attack plane to help.

"This is a tight area. There is no cell service, there are a lot of homes here on the hill. There was a threat for spread," Webber said.
