Gold Hill man killed, suspect in custody

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested an 18-year-old Gold Hill man Thursday in connection with the shooting death that morning of another man.

Wiley River Foxx was being held in the Jackson County Jail and charged with second-degree murder of 24-year-old James Watters.

Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon dispatch received a report at 3:55 a.m. Thursday of gunshots, screaming and subjects fleeing from a location in the 500 block of Gustaf Street in Gold Hill.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find Watters unconscious and not breathing with multiple gunshot wounds. Watters was pronounced dead at 4:20 a.m.

Dispatch received a report at 4:17 a.m. about Foxx’s whereabouts and he was quickly detained without incident.

Jackson County Fire District No. 3 provided aid until Mercy Flights arrived to transport Watters to the hospital. Medford police also assisted.

The Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit is assisting with the case. The unit is composed of detectives from the Sheriff’s Office, MPD, Oregon State Police, Jackson County District Attorney’s office and other local agencies.
