The body was found alongside the railroad tracks near Mountain View Cemetery. There were no immediate indications of suspicious circumstances, police said.

The sheriff’s office described the body as being in an advanced state of decomposition.

Ashland Fire and Rescue, along with the Ashland Police Department, arrived at the scene at 9:52 a.m. The body was located within Jackson County, so sheriff’s deputies and Medical Examiner detectives took over the investigation.

An Oregon State Police forensic pathologist will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, police said.

The name of the person will be made public once kin have been notified, the sheriff’s office added.
