Resident suffers smoke inhalation in Summit Avenue fire
Nearly two dozen firefighters from the Medford Fire Department and Jackson County Fire District No. 3 — five engine crews and two battalion chiefs in total — were called to a fire at a four-unit, single-story residential structure at 5 Summit Ave., just after 10 p.m. Thursday.
One person was transported by Mercy Flights for treatment of smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.
The fire was contained to a single room in one of the units by firefighters using water hoses to extinguish it, said Medford Fire Department Battalion Chief Jason John.
The original report to emergency dispatch was that the structure was occupied, but firefighters arrived to find that everyone had left the building.
“Luckily, everybody was out,” John said.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, John added.
