Medford police investigate murder, hit-and-run
Medford police are sorting through several crimes scenes and investigating a murder as they try to piece together events that began with a hit-and-run accident near downtown.
Medford police responded to the area of 10th and Hamilton streets Friday just before 12:30 p.m., to investigate a hit-and-run accident with property damage. As that investigation unfolded and the hit-and-run suspect was apprehended, a homicide was discovered nearby.
According to a police bulletin issued Friday afternoon, several witnesses called in various locations of a vehicle as it made its way downtown. Several minutes later, officers found the damaged vehicle unoccupied on Earhart Street, near Riverside Avenue.
“Officers were checking the area and were made aware of a nearby disturbance at Sis-Q Motel, 722 S. Riverside Ave.,” said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau. The suspect fled as officers approached, but police caught him after a foot chase on Riverside Avenue.
Officers subsequently learned that the other person involved in the disturbance at the motel was dead. Police say the victim is believed to have been an employee of the motel.
“The suspect is believed to have been involved in other crimes earlier in the day, which are still under investigation,” Budreau said. “As a result there are multiple crime scenes. Detectives have taken over the case.”
