A 21-year-old woman is safe after spending roughly nine hours in below-freezing temperatures near Butte Falls Highway.

The woman, who lives on Indian Creek Road, was found with a dangerously low body temperature Sunday morning after getting lost overnight in the search for two of her dogs, according to a social media post on the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

At about 3 a.m. Sunday, the woman left her home in the search for her animals, but police say she quickly got disoriented in temperatures below freezing.

She spent the night walking with her dogs and ultimately found help about noon Sunday on Butte Falls Highway. Despite clothing appropriate for the weather, she needed to be treated at a nearby hospital for hypothermia.

Overnight through Sunday morning, about 25 Jackson County Search and Rescue personnel searched for the woman, including a drone, K-9 and airplane.
