A man found dead last week on a hiking trail in the Paradise Lane area of Ashland has been identified as Matthew Daniel McCormick, 37, of Medford, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said hikers discovered a body lying in the middle of a trail above Ashland and called 911. Sheriff’s deputies and Ashland police responded and confirmed the man was dead. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team was called to recover the body because it was very snowy and remote.

No evidence of foul play was discovered, according to police. An Oregon State Police forensic pathologist conducted an autopsy Wednesday and determined McCormick died of hypothermia because of exposure.

The victim appeared to have sustained injuries from a fall, and alcohol may have been a factor, police said. Toxicology reports are pending.
