Update: Gas leak prompts Medford road closures

Some locations without natural gas service until this evening

There is a natural gas leak near the intersection of Poplar Drive and East McAndrews Road in Medford.

It was reported just after 2:15 p.m. to emergency dispatch.

Poplar Drive and McAndrews Road are closed in that area -- with vehicle traffic being diverted to nearby streets -- while workers dig through the road to reach the leaking pipe, according to the Medford Police Department.

It’s advised that people stay clear of the area.

No evacuations have been deemed necessary, but police report that the natural gas odor is strong.

It’s unknown how long it will be until the problem is resolved, though Avista Utilities is attempting to have the gas line secure by 5 p.m.

The three dozen Avista customers now without gas service should have it restored this evening, a company spokesman said.
