Two arrested in fatal Medford stabbing
Medford police and Jackson County sheriff’s detectives arrested two people Thursday for the fatal stabbing Tuesday of 31-year-old Brittany Laine Lovrovich in downtown Medford.
Police say that the two suspects, Hannah Marie Martin, 21, and her boyfriend, Zackary Carl Helwagen, 30, met with the victim Tuesday at about 1:47 a.m. intending to rob her of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid.
The victim and suspects met in a parking lot between Rumors Lounge and the OK Market in the 1200 block of North Riverside Drive in Medford, according to a press release from the Medford Police Department.
Police said Lovrovich believed she was going to sell fentanyl to the suspects. During the robbery, Martin — also known as Mel — stabbed the victim, who died at the scene, police said.
Both suspects fled in a vehicle. The fentanyl was recovered from the scene.
On Thursday, detectives determined the suspects were at a residence on Powell Creek Road in Williams. While police conducted surveillance of the residence, Helwagen left in the same vehicle allegedly used during the homicide, the release said.
At 2:01 p.m. Thursday, Helwagen was pulled over and arrested without incident in Jacksonville. Detectives arrested Martin at the residence in Williams at 2:55 p.m.
Martin and Helwagen were booked for second-degree murder and first-degree robbery and lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where they are being held without bail.
During the course of the investigation, police said they learned that Martin may have been involved in an unrelated and unreported stabbing in the Medford-Jacksonville area involving similar circumstances.
Anyone with information on either case was asked to call Medford police Det. Brandon Amaya at 541-774-2297.
