Murder, robbery suspects make court appearance Wednesday
The two suspects charged with murder in the stabbing and robbery of a woman in downtown Medford March 22 appeared electronically Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court.
Zackary Carl Helwagen, 30, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the killing of Brittany Laine Lovrovich, 31.
Hannah Marie Martin, 21, alleged by police to have wielded the knife that killed Lovrovich, waived her right to plead and will be arraigned on a grand jury indictment charging her with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery April 27. A probable cause hearing scheduled for Friday was postponed.
According to Medford police, Lovrovich met with Martin and Helwagen in the 1200 block of North Riverside Drive between Rumors Lounge and the OK Market to sell them fentanyl, a synthetic opioid. Instead, the drug deal turned into a robbery, and Martin allegedly stabbed Lovrovich, police said.
The drugs were reportedly found by police at the scene.
The day Martin was arrested, police issued an advisory saying Martin may have stabbed someone else in a similar robbery, but police said Wednesday Martin is no longer a suspect in that case.
Helwagen is scheduled for a pre-trial conference April 11.
Martin and Helwagen are being held without bail in the Jackson County Jail.
