Man gets 7.5 years for fatal 2019 crash on Hwy 62

A man was sentenced Monday to 7.5 years in prison for a fatal crash in December 2019 on Highway 62.

Jason Robert Renfro, 38, of Prospect, pleaded no-contest in Jackson County Circuit Court to charges of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Renfro was also sentenced to five years of post-prison supervision, permanent revocation of his state driver’s license and ordered to pay restitution, the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office reported.

The crash resulted in the death of Rickie Ray Beer, 70, and serious injury to his wife, Susan Rae Beer, both of Eagle Point. A passenger in Renfro’s vehicle, Lawrence Hunsley, was also seriously injured, according to news reports.

At about 2:35 p.m. Dec. 10, 2019, Renfro was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser wagon westbound on Highway 62 when he crossed the center line and collided with a Volkswagen Beetle driven by Rickie Ray Beer near Crystal Drive, according to Oregon State Police.

Rickie Ray Beer was declared dead at the scene.

A blood test after the collision determined that Renfro had recently used marijuana and methamphetamine. OSP said it found both substances as well as paraphernalia in Renfro’s vehicle, the D.A.’s office stated.
