The Point Pub: Good food in Central Point

During a year-long refurbishment of downtown Central Point, completed late last year, East Pine Street was torn up to add new drainage pipes and repaved. Afterward, decorative planters and planting beds were added along the sidewalks and filled with colorful perennials. During the summer months, large hanging baskets of multi-colored flowers hung from decorative light posts lining the street, giving the street an Old World flavor.

Many of the street’s businesses joined in redecorating and repainting their storefronts and added new signage.

The Point Pub sits in the middle of this refurbished zone in the Rostel Building. Purchased by German immigrant C.B. Rostel in 1899 for $2,000, a grand sum in those days, the building was remodeled in 1909 and doubled in size to accommodate a furniture merchant and a meat market.

In 2013, a group of friends bought the Rostel Building with a mission to provide a neighborhood pub and grill experience.

My sister Chris and I decided to visit The Point for lunch. When we walked in, we noticed a welcoming seating area with comfortable couches and chairs. It would be a perfect place to sit and enjoy one of The Point’s specialty cocktails ($7.75), such as the Bear Creek Bombshell, with strawberry vodka, fresh cranberries, cream, Collins mix and three olives, or the Rojo Rogue, with tequila, pomegranate liqueur, fresh grapefruit, lime and ginger beer.

The pub’s walls are decorated with black-and-white photos of life in Central Point during the early 1900s. We enjoyed taking a few moments to view the historical past of the city. Big-screen TVs tuned to various events for the dedicated sports fans among us adorned the walls.

We chose a table next to a fireplace, which provided welcome warmth on yet another gray winter day in the Rogue Valley.

The Point’s menu covered a wide range of categories with three or four choices listed under each: starters, burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups, favorites, pizzas and desserts.

Starters include crispy calamari, chicken wings and chicken quesadillas. Burger choices are the classic cheese, a blue-cheese burger, and The Point Burger with jalapeño cream cheese, avocado and bacon.

A Philly Cheesesteak nears the top of the sandwich choices. “The Point” Monte Christo — a French-toasted turkey breast, Canadian bacon, cheddar and Swiss sandwich sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with strawberry jelly — held the top slot. Also look for steak sandwiches, chicken Caesar wraps, grilled-chicken and turkey club paninis.

Other dishes, the Point Favorites, include pasta Alfredo with penne pasta and beer-battered fish. There’s also a good selection of pizzas to choose from, or you can build your own small, medium or large pizza.

I chose the The Bleu Burger — a seasoned ground-beef patty with blue-cheese crumbs, caramelized onions and jalapeño aioli served with a side of fries ($12.50) — for my luncheon, and my sister decided on a small pizza with Canadian bacon, pepperoni, salami, Italian sausage and bacon ($14).

The burger’s ingredients blended together into one delicious flavor, and the fries had a spicy flavor. My sister’s pizza was tasty, though overcooked and slightly burned on top.

We decided to split dessert and had no problem choosing which one ... the bundt cake soaked in bourbon and a caramel-pecan sauce and topped with vanilla ice cream ($8).

The Point offers a noteworthy special on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Called Taps ‘n’ Tacos, the pub partners with breweries to pair brews with specially prepared tacos.

On Feb. 12, Caldera Brewing Company of Ashland will pair a brew with teriyaki-salmon tacos, and on Feb. 26, Worthy Brewing of Bend will match a brew with verde beef tacos. Tacos are three for $10 and pints are $3.50, with a two-pint limit.

Also noteworthy are the 15 tables for guests during warmer months in a shaded patio setting. A sign on the patio’s gated entrance indicates that well behaved dogs are allowed inside the patio with well trained owners.
