Tidings has a new editor

We’d like to announce the appointment of Justin Umberson as the new editor of the Ashland Tidings.

Justin will direct news coverage of both the Tidings and the Mail Tribune, where he’s worked in different capacities since 2016. He started as a copy editor, then was promoted to copy desk chief after Rosebud Media brought pagination back in-house. He became city editor of the Mail Tribune last November.

He has 10 years’ experience in newspapers, including as copy editor at the Corpus Christi Caller Times in Texas and news editor at the Wenatchee World in Washington.

We want to thank former Tidings Editor Bert Etling for his five years of wonderful service to Ashland Tidings readers. No other news outlet has come close to covering City Hall and the issues Ashlanders care about — from transients downtown to the management changes at the senior center to saving trees in neighborhoods and Lithia Park — than the Tidings under Bert’s leadership. He increased the number of local columns, too, so readers could hear from a wide variety of voices in their community.

Consolidation of editors became necessary in order to prepare both papers for their future: Offering readers news and information about their communities when and how they want it, whether it be in print, online, on mobile, on air, even live streaming.

We will continue to serve the Ashland community with stories that matter. That help our readers and viewers to be better citizens, parents and partners. That shed light into the dark corners of their government and help them to be better informed voters. That surprise and delight them and tell them something they never knew before.

We hope you will continue to support us, through both subscriptions and advertising, so we can continue to offer Ashland its own daily newspaper — one of the oldest in Oregon.
