Medford school official takes job in the Eagle Point School District

Medford schools' human resources director for the past 20 years, who is set to retire July 1, will serve as the Eagle Point School District's interim business manager next school year.

The hiring of Dan Zaklan as business manager is listed on the Eagle Point School Board's consent agenda — actions approved without discussion — during the board's June 11 meeting. His salary will be announced at that time.

"It's a great opportunity," Zaklan said. "They're really working hard at Eagle Point to be an outstanding school district."

Zaklan will replace Greg Lecuyer, who accepted a position in the Corvallis School District, effective July 1.

Zaklan, 63, will leave the Medford district July 1 but will remain on the payroll as a director until Dec. 31, when his 114 days of vacation run out.

Zaklan has no experience as a school business manager, but he has worked closely with the Medford schools business office as human relations director. He also has about 36 credit hours toward an associate's degree in accounting.

He worked for 20 years as human resources director in the Medford district, which serves more than 12,000 students. During that time, he also occasionally picked up other duties as the district's budget shrank, including secondary education director, athletic director and principal of Medford's night high school.

He began his career in 1970 as a teacher and acting assistant principal at Thurston Junior High in Springfield.

Various former Medford district employees have gone to the Eagle Point district since Superintendent Cynda Rickert took the reins of the 4,200-student system. Rickert served as principal of South Medford High School until 2004, when she was hired as school improvement director for the Southern Oregon Education Service District.

Those who have gone to Eagle Point include special programs director Doug McKenzie, former principal of North Medford High School; central office secretary Kathy Ascuena, former office manager at South Medford High School; and Eagle Point High School Principal Allen Barber, former South Medford band director.

Rickert invited Zaklan to apply for the interim business manager's position. Zaklan was at one time her professional mentor in the Medford district.

"I know Cynda well and will love to work with her again and Doug and Allen," Zaklan said.
