Oak Grove, Lone Pine to adjourn early
Medford's Oak Grove and Lone Pine elementary pupils will have a head start on summer break this week because of scheduled bond construction.
The last day of classes is Wednesday for Lone Pine and Thursday for Oak Grove. Teachers and other employees will use the extra time without students to pack up classrooms to make way for summer renovations.
In the fall, Lone Pine will resume classes two days later than other Medford campuses, and Oak Grove will start one day late while employees move back into the renovated space.
The Medford School Board is expected to consider today whether to allow Jackson and Roosevelt elementary schools to adjourn for winter break two days earlier than other campuses and continue the break two days later to allow time for employees to move into those rebuilt schools.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. in the South Medford High School cafeteria, 815 S. Oakdale Ave., Medford.
The calendar for 2009-10 has not yet been decided, in part because of budgetary considerations, so the exact dates for the start of school in the fall and the winter break are not yet known. However, under school board policy, the board must approve any calendar changes at specific campuses.
Lone Pine, Oak Grove, Jackson and Roosevelt elementary schools, Hedrick and McLoughlin middle schools and North and South Medford high schools are undergoing construction or renovation this summer, paid for by a $189 million bond package voters approved in November 2006.
Staff and students have been displaced from the Jackson and Roosevelt campuses for the past two years for partial demolition and construction. Jackson and Roosevelt students are divided between Hoover Elementary School, the West Side School and Hedrick and McLoughlin middle schools.
