RCC employees will take unpaid days off

Rogue Community College employees have agreed to forgo all raises and take up to six unpaid furlough days in 2009-10.

The money-saving measure was included in the college's budget, which was adopted last week.

Last week, members of the RCC Education Association, a union for faculty members, and Oregon School Employees Association, which represents clerical, maintenance and other employees, voted in favor of the salary concessions, officials said.

Managers, who are not represented by a union, had been scheduled to receive a one-time stipend in 2008-09 in lieu of a cost-of-living increase but agreed last month to forgo the payment and accept a salary freeze. They also will take the furlough days, which will be set on days that no classes are scheduled.

Officials expect the six furlough days to save the college as much as $420,000. If state funding increases, however, the number of furlough days could be reduced.

RCC adopted a 2009-10 general-fund budget of $29.6 million — up slightly from the $29.2 million originally proposed — on June 16. The college built its budget on the expectation that the state will provide $440 million to all community colleges. At that level of funding, RCC would get about $6 million next year, $2.5 million less than it got from the state this year.

RCC President Peter Angstadt praised faculty and staff for agreeing to the wage and salary cuts so the school could focus on serving students and avoiding layoffs.
