South Medford, Scenic crowned Brain Bowl champs

South Medford High School and Scenic Middle School have been crowned the champions of the 2012 Southern Oregon Brain Bowl and have earned the right to represent the region in National Brain Bowl competitions.

The Scenic team defeated middle schoolers from St. Mary's Crusaders by a score of 53-39 to win the 35th annual Middle School Brain Bowl Championship.

The South Medford team remained undefeated in besting Ashland, 47-36, to take the Varsity Brain Bowl Championship.

The competition is similar to the television series, "Jeopardy." Students' knowledge in a variety of areas is tested with questions and the teams "buzz in" to earn first shot at answering those questions, with points awarded for correct answers and deducted for incorrect answers.

Southern Oregon Brain Bowl is a partnership among Southern Oregon University's Pre-College Youth Programs, the Southern Oregon Educational Service District and Southern Oregon Public Television.

More than 450 students participate each year, with teachers serving as coaches. The competition is open to students attending all public and private schools in the region.
