Ashland fills open position on School Board

The Ashland School Board elected a new member to replace Ruth Alexander, who resigned last month.

Jim Westrick was selected unanimously Monday out of two applicants.

Westrick worked as a high school science teacher for eight years in Illinois, Indiana and California and was a high school administrator in California for two years before moving to Ashland in 2009.

"He has a strong educational background," said board Chairwoman Carol Davis. "I think he'll bring a lot of great things to the board."

Westrick has three children attending public schools in Ashland, Davis said.

He served on the district's open enrollment committee and on the Ashland Schools Foundation grant committee.

Deneice Zeve, who founded the Willow Wind Community Association, a parent-teacher association at Willow Wind Community Learning Center, was the second applicant.

"She was an excellent candidate, but we only had one position," said Davis. "It was a tough decision."

The board encouraged Zeve to stay active within the school district and to run for a position on the school board.

Westrick will serve until June 30, 2013.

His position and two others will be up for election next spring.

Alexander resigned for personal reasons after serving on the board for seven years.
