Rogue Valley Community Television revamped
Rogue Valley Community Television has been redesigned and updated at Southern Oregon University, and it has a new name to go with it — Southern Oregon Digital Media Center.
The goal is to "expand the role of what we used to call RVTV to expand into a variety of channels," said Erik Palmer, academic coordinator for SODMC.
"We're taking our content beyond simple television," said Brandon Givens, government and public access coordinator for RVTV.
A digital video player has been added as part of SODMC, which will enable anyone to view content, not just those with access to cable television. Other equipment at the center was upgraded as well to allow for high-definition quality in productions and broadcasts.
The name of the center was changed to reflect the larger changes within the organization, though RVTV still exists within SODMC. Over the course of the change, which began in the summer of 2011, the building has been reorganized to expand lab space and enhance the studio. Much of the redesign began by asking how extra space within the building could be utilized to benefit students, Givens said.
"We saw a need for way more university student access," said Givens. "They needed more space and needed more tools. ... It's always been student driven."
In the process of redesigning the organization, physical workspace for students nearly tripled, according to Givens.
Classes will produce new video and cable content, and eventually that kind of production will be required for students working with SODMC. The plan is to open up collaboration with students from programs and departments across campus, including Emerging Media and Digital Arts, Communications, and Performing Arts.
"This will hopefully lead to creating larger audiences and stronger portfolio projects and pieces for the real world," said Palmer.
SODMC is available for both students and community members. Givens hopes to encourage people to visit and ask questions if they are interested in using the center.
"We're trying to be a hub for community organizations," said Givens.
