SOU selects tech exec to boost brand

Southern Oregon University hired a former executive from Microsoft and Apple as the school's executive director of marketing and communications.

The hiring of Marc Tramonte comes at a time when the university is attempting to stand out among other universities in the nation, most of which receive more taxpayer money than SOU, said Jim Beaver, the school's director of interactive marketing and media relations.

Tramonte's job will be to disseminate the school's brand image and culture, according a news release from the school.

He'll also ensure that the school's presentation in advertising, publications and its website is relevant, accurate, engaging and highly creative, according to the release.

"This position is key to our transformational change efforts," said SOU President Mary Cullinan in a news release.

"Marc will work with our marketing and communications team and with individuals and offices all over campus to help us realize our vision of being a distinctive campus that thrives in the volatile, competitive environment of the 21st century."

Tramonte was unavailable for comment Friday. In the release from the school he said he was thrilled to be at SOU and to contribute to its growth and development.

"There are many opportunities to apply the proven marketing and communications practices learned in the tech industry to the challenges and opportunities at SOU," he said in the release.

Tramonte worked the past two years as founder and managing partner of Foots Creek Consulting, Inc., in Bellevue, Wash., specializing in large-scale Web publishing management, demand generation, and lead acquisition strategies and programs, content development and email marketing.

Before that, he worked for 16 years in management roles at Microsoft, and prior to that, Tramonte worked as senior manager for training development and delivery at Apple Inc.

Tramonte begins work on April 1.

Beaver said jobs in the marketing department will not be lost because of Tramonte's hiring.

The Oregon University System is the fastest-growing university system in the country, but it is near the bottom in the U.S. in state funding, Beaver said.

"That's the big challenge we're facing," Beaver said.
