Speech and debate team claims Jean Ward title
The Ashland High School speech and debate team scored a combined 33.8 points to edge second-place Cleveland (27) and third-place Westview (34.5) and win the 32-team Jean Ward Invitational competition on Saturday at Lewis and Clark College in Portland.
Ashland racked up 125 points in five debate events to easily outdistance every other school in that category, and had the fifth-best total score in individual events.
Kate Joss-Bradley and Sarah Lasoff both went 4-0 for Ashland High in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate. Also performing well for AHS were Ryan Brown and John Ropp, who teamed up to go 4-0 in the open parliamentary competition, as did Brielle Preskinis and Noah Falkner.
Ashland's next tournament is scheduled for Feb. 20-21.
