Crater student places at DECA nationals

Lily Young

Crater High junior Lily Young placed second in marketing communications at the Distributive Education Clubs of America International Career Development Conference, the best individual finish in school history.

Young and Crater senior Abe Hull, who competed in quick-serve restaurant management, advanced to the finals after performing well at DECA’s State Career Development Conference then shining in the ICDC opening round.

Also representing Crater at ICDC were Abigail Weber and Elizabeth Lotts (travel and tourism marketing), Hannah Mathews and Malia Rozett (buying and merchandising), MacKenzie Saunders (apparel marketing), Helen Hull (sports and entertainment marketing) and Mary Nadauld (retail marketing).

Hull and Young were two of 12 Oregonians who advanced to the ICDC finals this year. Twenty students advance to the finals in each event. They made their final presentations virtually via Zoom April 27 and found out where they placed during the Virtual Grand Awards Session the following Thursday, May 6.

Prior to this year, no Crater High student had ever cracked the top four — a fifth-place finish in 2004 now ranks as the second-best showing for the program.
