That's right, the United Nations General Assembly instituted World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. According to their Web site, the day aims to:
1) Give a human face to environmental issues;
2) Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
3) Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
4) Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
This year's theme is "Your Planet Needs You — UNite to Combat Climate Change."
The United Nations Environment Programme offers a list of tips to help you green your life.
If you're looking for something a little more local, consider the Oregon Green Expo, coming up on the Fourth of July weekend in Medford. They're holding a green building contest — you can construct a model of a sustainable building or enter your existing home or commercial building. The deadline to enter the contest is June 15. See dailytidings.com for more information.
In other green news, Oregon Business Magazine has announced the 100 Best Green Companies. In Ashland, Standing Stone Brewing Co., the Ashland Food Co-op and Adroit Construction Company all made the list. In Medford, Sabroso Company, Avista Utilities and Hakatai Enterprises also made the list.
Now stop staring at your computer and go enjoy the outdoors!
