Tip of the Week
Having your roe clusters stay on a bait hook is one of winter steelhead fishing's greatest frustrations. But there's a way to keep your bait on the hook better and even get steelhead to strike harder.
Spawn sacs built with light mesh can make the difference. Sold in tackle stores, the mesh can be used to pre-make dozens of small balls of bait for steelhead. Simply put a dime-size chunk of roe in the mesh, tie it off and place it in the egg loop. The mesh comes in red, pink and orange colors, but red works best for steelhead. They are now popular on the lower Rogue and Chetco rivers.
