Phoenix fire annexation, Kings Highway water district ballots are due by 8 tonight

Ballots are due today for special-election measures determining fire protection and water services in two different parts of Jackson County:

  • City of Phoenix residents and Jackson County Fire District No. 5 voters will decide whether the city will be annexed into the rural district.
  • Residents along Kings Highway will vote to dissolve an existing water district and be included in the city of Medford service area.

Late Monday, turnout hovered around 35 percent. Election officials expected another 10 percent of voters to turn in ballots today.

For the fire service measure in Phoenix, city residents and district voters must approve the merger. Fire protection services for the cash-strapped city have been provided by District 5 since October.

Phoenix residents will see an initial increase of 34 cents, for a total of $3.19 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, for fire service. Fire District 5 patrons will see no increase.

City officials have said keeping fire services under the city could cost $4.50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation or more.

Ballots are due at the county elections office, 1101 West Main St., Medford, by 8 tonight.
