Buckley re-elected

Voters strongly backed Ashland Democrat Peter Buckley's bid for re-election to the Oregon House Tuesday, but Republican opponent Sandy Abercrombie said she was waiting to see the final results this morning before conceding the race.

Buckley, who was seeking his fourth term as the District 5 representative, received 60.3 percent of the vote, or 11,073 votes, according to the county's preliminary report Tuesday night.

"There are still votes to be counted, but I do think I'm in good shape," he said late Tuesday.

Abercrombie, a Medford resident and political newcomer, received 39.5 percent of the vote, or 7,257 votes, according to preliminary counts.

"It's not over till it's over," she said.

Buckley, co-chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, said he hopes to continue to work to address the state's budget woes while representing District 5, which encompasses Ashland, Talent, Phoenix and Jacksonville and a small portion of west Medford.

"I'm looking forward to finding a path to get the state through this crisis and back on solid ground," he said.
